American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays due to weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, can I secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the number of planes in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were postponed an mean of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the US, could experience problems from low staffing later in the day.
